Synopsis
A Russian teacher secretly documents his small town school's transformation into a war recruitment center during the Ukraine invasion, revealing the ethical dilemmas educators face amid propaganda and militarization.
Moviegoers are saying
Pavel Talankin's courageous documentary captures the chilling transformation of a Russian school as propaganda replaces education following Ukraine's invasion. Audiences are deeply divided between praising the filmmaker's bravery in exposing militarization of children and criticizing his self-aggrandizing approach that some call narcissistic.

Some Americans will watch this documentary and think, “Wow, a country where its government is ran by an unhinged dictator that pumps dangerous propaganda into its news cycle, deliberately targets the youth, and silences anyone that attempts to protest? What a terrible place…

James (Schaffrillas)Feb 1, 2025I really hope Pavel Talankin will be okay. He took a huge risk making a film that Vladimir Putin would consider treasonous. I can't believe the risks he took. Pavel is a teacher filled with positivity, warmth and a kind of endearing dorky sense of humor. He's an individual…

Dead Poets Society - Dictatorship Version.
Varun GroverJan 23, 2026narcissistic and pointless. pretty shocked at such positive reception from the west, haven’t we seen enough strong and intelligent anti-war docs from all over the world before? the author used and abandoned the people he claimed to love, fled the country not caring about…
gamisamaOct 21, 2025Pascha is a little too proud of himself for my liking, a little too pleased with his rebellious decision to...play Lady Gaga over the school PA or reference Harry Potter (Russian leftists are really still all in on Rowling, huh?) and ends up being a little insufferable as a…

This is quite incredible. This film gives us an intimate and harrowing look into the horrors of propagandizing education and the heartbreaking effects it has. It is so powerful to see someone with a unique position step up and gain the courage to do something. Talankin risks so much to make a…
Ani N. lovedMr. Nobody Against PutinThis unassuming, novice videographer becomes a filmmaker overnight delivering a perspective on a war that most don’t get a chance to see. It’s organic and raw, building unintentional tension. It makes you think how fragile democracy is and how quickly things can become abnormal
blue cat lovedMr. Nobody Against Putinthis documentary is a must watch, for everyone. it depicts so well how propaganda and indoctrination seep into education systems, along with how it terribly effects the whole world. some of the negative responses to this film are valid, specifically the critique of how the movie sort of makes it…

to act out against putin and his regime in even the smallest way is ridiculously brave, and pavel deserves all the praise in the world for sharing his message and fleeing an otherwise brainwashed town; especially since it was all he knew. wonderfully shot and written, what a man
Kristinka likedMr.
Bonnie likedMr. Nobody Against PutinSurprised this was Academy Award winning when I found the other documentaries more compelling, but nonetheless still an incredible look inside a Russian school after the start of their war. The propaganda progression is continuously fascinating. 8

“Mr. Nobody Against Putin" is a fascinating documentary that gives a unique, offbeat glimpse into the Ukrainian war—like if Jojo Rabbit grew up and got serious. Eye-opening, intense, and entirely unforgettable.
KG likedMr. Nobody Against PutinReminder the power that freedom of speech has. Militarization of children born into their situation makes me sick. Reminiscing on my favorite teachers and hope his students feel the same way for speaking out.
David likedMr. Nobody Against PutinReally interesting insight into Russian education. However, this chap seemed to be on a bit of a vendetta because he lost out on the best teacher award

The film details how constant propaganda, lies and outright gaslighting can effectively numb and coerce a populace.

Purely on a craft level, “Mr. Nobody Against Putin” is skillful and engrossing, never more so than when it captures wrenchingly painful moments in people’s lives with a detachment that keeps the focus on the subjects rather than shifting to Talankin.

While the plight of Ukraine is undeniably horrific, Mr. Nobody Against Putin shows a very real cost and the damaging ripple effect this invasion will have on Russian civilians.
