Movie Info & Cast

Synopsis

Andy Serkis directs this intense new adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, combining motion capture (naturally!) with live action and a stellar cast. Mowgli (Rohan Chand) is a young outcast learning the ways of the jungle from the wolf pack that’s raised him, as well as a bear named Baloo (Serkis) and a panther named Bagheera (Christian Bale). But not every creature Mowgli meets is quite so friendly – particularly the questionable snake named Kaa (Cate Blanchett), and of course the fearsome tiger Shere Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch). As Mowgli survives the dangers of his jungle home, he’ll also have to face another set of dangers – the ones that come from his human origins. Mowgli also stars Matthew Rhys and Freida Pinto as well as voice performances from Naomie Harris, Peter Mullan, Jack Reynor, Eddie Marsan, and Tom Hollander.

The whole movie feels oddly stranded and dramatically inert, despite the obvious passion that went into making it.

While the film’s perception of the politics of the jungle is often profound, the same cannot be said of its take on the human world.

For every scene of dazzling wonder, there’s another of outsized horror; for every big cat who looks ready to jump off the screen, there’s a wolf that appears bizarrely unfinished. There is little middle ground.
