Another shining example on why Guillermo del Toro should be allowed to do whatever he wants
Ethan EthanOct 23, 2025*Director’s Cut* Still love the slimy practical effects and the palpable tension every time a character sticks their hand into a dark space, but on a second watch I really loved how the first half essentially plays out like a film noir. Even if the second half regresses to…
Joe AJan 14, 2022Cockroaches were on top of the world following 1996's Joe's Apartment. But that taste of success would prove to be a mere morsel when -one short year later- Guillermo Del Toro would turn on the lights and send our small hard cousins scattering. Many feel that the score was…

single white femalienOct 17, 2014A seemingly forgotten late-1990s horror gem, Guillermo Del Toro's "Mimic" is a stylish and effective chiller. Putting his own spin on the God-player tale, Del Toro' tells a Frankenstein story that does not focus on the resurrection of the dead but on creating new life to…

actually was way more clever than i thought it was gonna be, it was pretty nasty but cool, i think some scenes went on for way too long but the bugs were some of the better cgi monsters i’ve seen

I have to be honest, I hate cockroaches and when someone told me was about that I didn’t want to see it even though It’s from Del Toro, now that I saw it, it’s good, I didn’t get disgusted, it’s a good story, as always the details are beautiful and it really aged well.
It leans into claustrophobic horror. The story blends science fiction with urban gothic flair, while the oppressive setting amplified paranoia. Although, the CGI is dated given when it came out.

I freaking LOVED the short story this is based on, and freaking hated how they bastardized the series elements of the story for cheap monster tropes—bah!
classic sci-fi, brought me back to when I used to watch the Syfy channel with my dad when I was a child.
