Beautifully done. A real tribute to the original. And all the cameos were delightful. Saw the original when I was young, and this will leave the same impression on kids.

For me, the moment where it all came together was during Blunt’s haunting rendition of The Place Where Lost Things Go, a heartbreaking lullaby that has something of the spine-tingling melancholy charm of Feed the Birds. Watching this sequence, I noticed I had started crying, and realised that I was safe – the movie’s spell was working and the magic was still here.
It’s well crafted, well acted, and features some terrific live-action/animation combos. But it never quite achieves liftoff, which is a big problem for a musical – especially this musical.
Some of the numbers are dazzling, some are exhausting, and many are a mix of both—and still, somehow they work.
