mia lee vicinoDec 5, 2020This gets so much better as it goes. It starts on such an odd note where it reads like you walked into the theatre an hour late. I think it’s just so frantic in that first act and the more it really starts to settle and invites you into what it’s trying to do, you come…
KarstenDec 4, 2020basically this movie is Orson Welles trying to get Mankiewicz’s ownership share diluted down to .03%

They let him make a love letter to his dad and I think that’s wonderful.
Jim CummingsNov 6, 2020good movie but give me Steve Kornacki busting out the Big Board and breaking down where all the different bits of Citizen Kane came from.

best picture marathon: film #3 “i couldn't have put it better myself, which may be why i write for the movies” to put it plainly: my GOD this is boring. if i had been shown this movie without any prior knowledge, no way would i have been able to guess it was made by david…

jawn dielmanNov 14, 2020Have you ever heard the story of the organ-grinder’s monkey? As a Fincher-head and a massive old Hollywood fan, it actually pains me to give it a rating this low, but I have to be honest with y’all, it just didn’t completely live up to my expectations. My main issue…

classic cinema pastiche directed by fincher?? depicts the making of citizen kane and the culture at large during that time period?? i cant put into words how cool this film is, albeit it overstays its welcome a tad bit. fascinating film about an equally fascinating time period

Going into this movie completely blind+having never seen Citizen Kane probably wasn’t a great idea but I still managed to enjoy it. Definitely gonna have to watch Citizen Kane and come back to this one at some point. Gary Oldman was also just awesome in this movie.
Perhaps if I had seen Citizen Kane, maybe I'd have more appreciation, but I found nothing interesting in this. David Fincher is a master director, so every aspect of filmmaking is superb here. The biography on Mank, at least the one done here, didn't appeal to me.

A good story, but overall this movie is a victim of its own pacing. 40min could have been shaven off easily without losing any substance. It’s unfortunate given the absolute insane star power behind it.
absolutely brilliant, and incredibly similar in message and meaning to citizen kane lol. if you love citizen kane, absolutely watch. even if you don’t, it’s a wonderful film!

Mank might not nearly live up to its subject’s crowning achievement, but it’s still a dense and enjoyable cinematic rant that would make its central lout proud.
For all its intelligence, Mank isn’t anything close to a masterpiece; it’s more a pleasurable feat of derring-do, a movie made with care and cunning and peopled by actors who know exactly what they’re doing.
Mank‘s definitely a film-tailor made for cinephiles; it’s a dense, complicated work with a screenplay as labyrinthine and mired in inside baseball as Kane‘s. But as a stylistic exercise and a work of craft, it’s one of Fincher’s most exciting in years. There’s hardly a false note in the cast, the costumes, the production design, or the score. And the Wellesian flourishes are an interesting stylistic move for a filmmaker usually known for his cold, crisp exactitude.
