Amazed I NEVER knew about the frog thing. Like that was never spoiled for me. That was an amazing twist. Can you even call it a twist? Is this how people felt when Darth Vader said that thing? That was such a 2020 thing to happen. I screamed "FROGS???" to an empty room.
KarstenFilm students and critics love to make a big deal about the "showy" moments in this movie. They go on about the long takes, the prologue, the hidden 82s, the narration, the sing-a-long and the frogs. It's kind of hard not to. And with an epic run-time of 188 minutes, there…
Craig DuffyDec 4, 2014Quite possibly the quickest 3 hours ever. An all around mesmerizing film from beginning till end. I am also truly shocked at how good John C. Reilly was. THE SOUNDTRACK IS AMAZING!

one of those movies where every time a new song comes on it triggers such a high that i think to myself "that's my favorite song in the whole world"
karen h.Sep 5, 2025I watched and I watched and I watched this movie when it was first released. Twice in theaters, rented three times, bought on DVD, wore it out. Gave my girlfriend the soundtrack for Christmas. Made my mom sit through it. Proselytized to wide annoyance. It was one of my…

this was so sad, but I loved it. reminded me of requiem for a dream where you’re put into the shoes of a bunch of suffering characters. great soundtrack too (Aimee Mann is so incredible).
A beautiful story about the complexity of the human experience and forgiveness. What a painful watch because of how compassionate it is and the empathy/understanding it looks for in the characters. Everyone’s at the top of their game and PTA’s craft is unrestrained and masterful.
This is one of the greatest movies of all time! Paul Thomas Anderson just does it right! I would say if you want something super crazy but also not that hard to follow you should watch this movie. This is my second favorite movie from PTA. My first favorite is There Will Be Blood

I saw this way back in 2000, but I don’t think my young mind could really comprehend what was going on. There are some truly amazing performances here, specifically by Tom Cruise! He should have won the Oscar that year! Paul Thomas Anderson knows how to write and direct a film!
some short and hectic scenes; others were slow and awkwardly long. adds to the peculiarity of this movie. basically multiple storylines that intertwine and sometimes feel like a fever dream but at the same time make complete sense and feel very normal (not the ending tho lol)🐸
Reminds me of a less cryptic and less Lanthimosian Kinds of Kindness. Excellent performances but a truly brilliant script. PTA is such a good director and this is already one of my favourites of his films. That one thing towards the end which I work spoil is absolutely mental

This movie was a fantastic character study of multiple different characters that all connect. The acting was amazing, easily the best part. The story was so masterfully interweaved that Paul Thomas Anderson deserves praise. And what an ending! Speechless. Overall, solid 9/10
possibly may have found my new favorite movie ever. im an atheist, but im still a history buff, so the Book of Exodus theme in this movie made me so excited. Tom Cruise was essentially Andrew Tate in this movie and William Macy was just William Macy. 10/10

Metacritic
A three-hour-and-10-minute exercise in slight characterization, pointlessly showy editing and vapid plotting.
None of the characters in Magnolia feel as vividly imagined as the porn stars and filmmakers and hangers-on of Boogie Nights.
The most imperfect of the year's best movies, Magnolia's flaws are easily forgiven because they are the result of go-for-broke ambition.
