(Saw in 70mm) When Lawrence blew out that match I gasped
Patrick WillemsJul 15, 2013how is a colonialist epic about a tormented sadist with a twinkle in his eyes so universally beloved?" ... best not to answer that. what i find most amazing about Lean's masterpiece is that such a politically thorny, morally vague 228-minute film about a man's…
davidehrlichJul 27, 2024Got to see a pristine, gorgeous 70mm print at the Aero, thanks to American Cinematheque. Was able to bring my 13-year-old son (his first time seeing it, and he really liked it!) and I'll treasure the memory of watching it with him this way.

The classic tale of a weird but harmless gay man who gets famous and then becomes insufferable.

Four glorious hours of camels walking in extreme long shot. Oh, and also a pretty devastating subversion of the white man's burden narrative, in which a man hates his own people and tries to go native, but is always reminded he cannot, no matter his accomplishments. Another…
Jake ColeApr 19, 2018Always thrown by how incredibly melancholy all four hours of this truly is - beginning with the literal death of a legend as we are then forced to witness one man’s breaking point and greatest regrets. Spoilers (I guess), but T.E. Lawrence’s happy-go-lucky charmer is…
Jacob KnightOct 16, 2021Getting swept up in riding the vast, beautiful whirlwind of revolutionary history and warrior myths just in time for the political realities of colonial empires and the vulnerabilities of our mortal bodies to gradually and brutally deflate it. Obviously not really a brave…

A well-made movie, but with historical distortion, Arabs being portrayed badly, and Lawrence being shown to be the purifying angel, that will anger anyone who knows the real history!
Dune wishes it was this good at portraying a short twink helping liberate a nomadic people group.

A truly beautiful movie, the scenery is some of the best I’ve seen. A movie actually using the truly beautiful world we live on instead of using cheaply made cgi scenery that we get more off. I love this movie the only thing bringing it down is the mild distortion of history.
Not 100% accurate, but a masterpiece of a movie with a heartbreaking protagonist. This touched my freakin soul. After reading the 7 pillars, I rlly wish they would’ve shown all of his redemption instead of just a hero’s journey but his “fall” & comeback were perfect + the ending

Guys stop disliking my Superman review I only like good movies
Interesting character study, and very detailed and impressively well-made film (despite some historical inaccuracies and other flaws). There's a reason why many great directors studied and were influenced by it. Remarkable breakthorugh.

The movie manages both senses of scale—the intimate and the expansive—with equal majesty, merging them into something moving, mesmerizing, and poetic, in a way only Lean movies could really manage.
In short, they don't make 'em like this one anymore. Viewing it is like taking a time machine to a movie age that was more naive than our own in some ways, more sophisticated and ambitious in others.
What a bold, mad act of genius it was, to make Lawrence of Arabia, or even think that it could be made.
