Moviegoers are saying
This intimate NYC indie about a poet's identity crisis has critics split between those praising its 'dignity and grace' with standout performances from Willem Dafoe and Greta Lee, and others finding it emotionally detached despite tackling weighty themes. The film explores nostalgia, missed chances, and artistic authenticity with what one reviewer called 'old school modesty,' though some felt it lacked the emotional punch to match its ambitious ideas.

a wonderful film about nostalgia, about missed life chances, about wrongly reanimated hope, about how people are complicated and messy, about how to survive with old school modesty in these narcissistic times, about the question what remains of you at the end. a small NYC…

Really enjoyed this. Lot of ideas to chew on. Authenticity in art, commodification, and the new NYC vs the old. No fireworks or gut punches here, but that’s right for this story.

As directed by Kent Jones (2018’s Diane), Late Fame is an appealingly humane movie, kind to its characters’ foibles in a way that a lesser film might play for laughs.

In “Late Fame,” a finely crafted character study starring Willem Dafoe, Ed learns that being the oldest person in the room is fun if you fall in with the right group of young people—but also that it’s tough to know if the group is right until you’re in it.

Even Dafoe, seemingly incapable of a false note or forced delivery, ultimately must fall in line with the movie’s broad-arc predictability.
