Honestly, who wouldn't go back to the 70s and fall in love with Fanny Ardant

What a delicate and imaginative way to talk about love, regrets and nostalgia.  After seeing this movie, all I wanted was to go home and cuddle my husband I've been arguing with everyday and that I've thought of leaving after more than 30 years of marriage. Except that I…

TIFF 2019 film #4 At the most basic level, Nicolas Bedos’ sophomore feature is a mashup of Kore-eda’s After Life with Westworld, plus ample dashes Kaurismaki and Lynch, metered with Aronofsky pacing. La belle époque jerks your chain. It’s always teasing you that it’s…

A little bit "Midnight in Paris", a little bit "Cabin in the Woods" (you'll see what I mean when you watch it), "Le Belle Epoque" is none-the-less entirely its own thing, a romantic comedy about rekindling the past even while knowing it's gone, and what's happening now, in…

The Truman Show walked so La Belle Époque could kneecap it over and over and over again with a 2x4.

Encore un film à ajouter à la liste "films à montrer aux personnes qui disent que le cinéma français c'est de la merde"

The nostalgia inherent in the human soul and our perennial longing for the past are the central ideas that Nicolas Bedos uses to tell the story of a man disillusioned with modern life who finds refuge from the overwhelming present. La Belle Époque is a moving and nostalgic…

La Belle Epoque is the sort of vastly entertaining mainstream French film that was produced with regularity during the 1970s-'80s and was sometimes remade by Hollywood. Those days are long gone but it could happen with this witty, sexy and original romantic comedy that touches many points of satisfaction.

The second feature from Nicolas Bedos is a sweet, inventive Richard Curtis-style romantic-comedy crowdpleaser that deftly balances hearty laughs and heartwarming emotion.

In the end, the story’s custom reenactment gimmick may not even have been necessary, so well-written and executed is the personal journey that underlies it.
