Kayako can't control her curse. She's trapped in boundless suffering and is begging for people to help her boy, but no one can. Toshio is scared and wants his cat and his Mom. Any Mom. "Are you my Mom?". Toshio, cold and tragic. A feral sprite. He won't KILL you, but if…

Haha, that’s the Japanese boy from Scary Movie 4.
KylerJul 21, 2019Lightning in a bottle. There's a lot here that shouldn't work. Ju-on: The Grudge doesn't really have a story, outside of the gradually unfolding explanation as to what happened to Kayako in order to turn her house into a gateway to Hell. The budget is barebones, which…
Herb GallowOct 13, 2016ghost lure & ghost loop & a ghost is a LOOP. i think i love these ghosts because they are always repeating the same things over and over. they had a bad experience in life and it bound them inexorably to orbiting that same moment for all of time. and when i woke up…

Insane that this came out 20 years ago, considering it’s scarier and creepier than half of what’s released nowadays. The final death rattle is still spine chilling.
Joe AMar 5, 2025Whenever the creepy little boy isn't on screen, all the other characters should be asking, "where's the creepy little boy??"

a little bit goofy and can be hard to follow sometimes with the non-chronological story but it was really cool and i like the ghosts so it was a fun watch, especially in a group

On one hand I really enjoy a lot of the concepts and the structure of the film, but on the other hand each story ends with the ghosts just killing the character and after a while it gets old. I never really found the film to be scary, except for the sounds the ghosts make. 5.5/10
While it makes a good case to be considered an all-time great, I fear this one doesn’t age as well as many would like to admit. Sound plays a bigger part than other mise en scene, but the story isn’t as solid as one would hope to truly get under your skin.

Basically, what you have in Ju-On is a collection of effectively scary sights and sounds - sound effects play a huge part in rolling that chill down your spine – and that's about it.
A haunted-house one-trick pony.
Ju-on never snaps into focus like a Go or a Pulp Fiction, and what at first registers as sloppy plotting starts to seem positively diabolical.
