Sam Neill changes his accent like four times in this
SpencerOct 11, 2020Definitely had a few expectations going into this knowing it was John Carpenter but dude... what the hell? I was hilariously unaware of how psychological this was. But also so fun. But also so unsettling?? Still processing but I really dig this.
KarstenJul 13, 2026This is not reality. One of the greatest performances ever put to screen - Sam Neill was truly one-of-one. Such a force.

John Carpenter fuses lurking Lovecraftian madness with Stephen King psychological terror, resulting in this New England nightmare tentacle jam that’s, at least for me, totally perfect. Equal parts cerebral and visceral with apocalyptic anxieties riding high, In the Mouth…

comrade_yuiAug 20, 201992 It's exhilarating to watch Carpenter utilize his skills as a peerless craftsman against a changing world of scare tactics and an evolving horror landscape. Like an old dog teaching itself new tricks. Terrifying and utterly engrossing.

Sam Neill is wonderful. The editing, especially in the final act, is superb, skillfully collapsing the distinction between the real and the dream. Although this is obviously an homage to both Lovecraft and Stephen King, it also works as a pointed critique of American mass…

“Every species can smell its own extinction. The last ones left won’t have a pretty sight.” 🤯 He finds out he’s fictional…the world’s gone insane and all that’s left is to eat popcorn and maniacally laugh at it all unfolding on screen. Brilliant and disturbingly relevant in 2025 when belief feels…
Enjoyed this one very much. does have a mix of king, lovecraft kinda meshed together. Mostly anything Carpenter directs i enjoy but this didnt dissapoint. now dont go into this thinking its a monster movie cause its not. but they are in there lurking...waiting..for you. i can see
This was a wild movie but it lives up to its name. It's cliche horror, but it's also somewhat layered at the same time. Whether it was intentional or not idk, but to me it seemed like a parody of what many people thought horror movies were doing to everybodys minds.

Very subversive to the rest of Carpenter’s films; this one is funny and more “playful”, he tries a lot of new things and turns away from old gimmicks. Something about it reminds me of a 30/40s thriller but more deranged.
I saw this in the theater and it creeped me out! The vibe is : Videodrome/Hellraiser/Jacobs Ladder/ Evil Dead. You know, dreamlike weird & campy. and Sam Neil 🙌🏼 He will 4ever be remembered for this and Event Horizon.

decent at best, but the concept could’ve been great. not Sam Neil’s best performance, his accent falters throughout the film. heavy handed references. enjoyed the ending tho. 4/10
This movie is a trip, I think in the good way. Sam Neil is awesome of course and Carpenter’s soundtrack and practical effects slap harder than getting back-fisted by an elder god
