Synopsis
Inspired by writer, director, and star James Morosini’s true life experience, I LOVE MY DAD follows Chuck (Patton Oswalt), a hopelessly estranged father who desperately wants to reconnect with his troubled son, Franklin (Morosini). Blocked on social media and concerned for his son’s life, Chuck impersonates a waitress online and starts checking in with Franklin. But things begin to spiral when Franklin falls for this imaginary girl (Claudia Sulewski) and wants nothing more than to meet her in person, as Chuck has inadvertently catfished his own son. A thrilling comedy with an unexpected twist, I LOVE MY DAD also stars Rachel Dratch, Lil Rel Howery, Amy Landecker and Ricky Velez.

cookieAug 4, 2022I Love My Dad is hysterically funny and, simultaneously, cringey as hell. I mean that in the best possible way. Patton Oswald stars as Chuck semi-estranged father of Franklin (James Morosini), a socially awkward young adult with suicidal tendencies. When Franklin blocks…

"This is incest." I Love My Dad transforms director/writer James Morosini's own traumatic experiences into an equal parts hilarious and chilling watch. It's a memorable sit-through where tears seep through the laughter, but in the end, all is well,…

AnthonyJul 22, 2022Was not expecting I LOVE MY DAD to work for me at first but it won me over by the end thanks to some well-earned emotion brought on by the performances of James Morosini & Patton Oswalt. I haven’t felt that uncomfortable during a cringe comedy in a long time.

therese <3Mar 13, 2022destined to be polarizing in its reliance on cringe comedy (especially when considering it’s all based on real life events for the writer/director/star) but it wisely forgoes empty shock value for something more human, even if its humanism is a blacker void than most would…

Weird, funny, uncomfortable, touching. You definitely have to put your judgements aside to enjoy this movie. Knowing it’s a true story about the writer makes the film a bit more touching than it would’ve been if made up

Is it a well-made film? Absolutely, and Morosini has a strong vision for how to shape a story and characters right out of the gate. Unfortunately, that doesn’t turn I Love My Dad into a must-watch.
Gently funny and much more forgiving than viewers might expect, the picture plays to Oswalt’s strengths and may resonate uncomfortably for parents worried about protecting their digital-native children without suffocating them or, worse, creating entirely new problems.
It may not resonate as anything deeper than a modern satire of the idea that father knows best, but it leans into its high-wire act with the fearlessness of a movie that knows just how fraught it can be to connect with anyone these days.
