PUT HARRIET TUBMAN ON THE $20 BILL YOU COWARDS!
MaryAnn 🌵Nov 2, 2019This kind of annoyed me because Harriet Tubman has SUCH an amazing and interesting story and it’s crazy that there hasn’t already been a movie about her. But she deserved a better movie than this one honestly. Cynthia Erivo did a really great job and Janelle Monae stood…

Some interesting threads get tugged a little here, about stark differences of class and gender and education among slaves and black abolitionists alike, but not hard enough to overcome what's mostly some very generic biopic stuff. And personally I would have loved a lot…
matt lynchNov 24, 2024cynthia erivo is just too good for this world
júliaSep 10, 2019Incredibly disappointing given how great the real life story is. Erivo and an underused Monae are both wonderful, and their dynamic is the best part of the film - however, everything around them is aggressively pedestrian and poorly thought out. From a story standpoint,…

Gratefully, this doesn’t shy away from Harriet Tubman’s singular religious faith (even the wilder stuff, like her prophetic visions) and Cynthia Erivo is an absolutely inspired choice, capturing her strength with such grace and vulnerability. Still, it’s unfortunate that…
Georgia ColeyNov 6, 2019Me immediately googling after the movie : “Was Harriet Tubman actually psychic?”
Emma 🔆Jan 11, 2025“Harriet” is yet another okey biopic that doesn’t justify its existence. It’s fine with a great performance from Cynthia Erivo, so I guess that’s something. Best actress Oscar nominations ranked

a beautiful film which depicted harriet tubman more than what your traditional, whitewashed american textbooks say. she was a war general, a freedom fighter, and should be a celebrated figure of utmost importance in every corner of the US.
harriet tubman is genuinely the most awe inspiring and brave figure in recent history. i immensely enjoyed experiencing her story through cynthia erivo, especially the commentary this made on christianity being used as a tool to subdue and manipulate enslaved people by framing their servitude and…

I love biopics and Tubman’s story is incredible so I was surprised I hadn’t heard of it before. I thought this was a great film BUT she deserved a more powerful script. A lot of it was generic, and it tried to cover too much in too little time. Could have been 3hrs easily. 7.5/10
this movie slayed. it depicted harriet tubman very well and how they were treated during slavery. i’m really glad they made a movie about her like this; she’s one of my biggest inspirations

This was such a beautiful recreation of her story, I loved how they showed the treatment and eventual freedom while being historically accurate. The actors did an amazing job <3
Just put her on the 100 dollar bill already 😩 but seriously a great picture that reminds us to never forget about this truly “True American Heroin” story. Amazing stuff…

The will of a soul lead by the spirit of the Lord
Beautiful! I also loved the artistic musical elements. They added depth without taking away from the story!
Metacritic
Harriet is a deeply spiritual film that asks the audience to take Harriet’s experience and religious beliefs at face value, but it’s fascinating to watch how Harriet’s faith in God evolves and expands to include faith in herself and her own power.
In work that emphasizes the unstoppable power of a persuasive performance, Erivo not only convincingly conveys the strength of the celebrated abolitionist’s fierce personality, she creates her as a realistic, multi-sided character, a complex woman of formidable self-belief and not any kind of plaster saint.
A disappointingly standard biopic, one whose technical flaws and paint-by-numbers clichés threaten to overshadow its subject’s compelling story.
