Although Russel Crowe really did amazing in this role, the real star of this movie is Joaquin Phoenix who really feels like the most despicable person to ever exist. Which is exactly how you should feel about him especially from the main character’s perspective.

Gladiator delivers everything its title promises. The surprise is that this bold revival of the period "sword-and-sandals" epic does so with solid acting, sure pacing and superior style interspersed with payoff-worthy pathos.

The script by producer David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson is serviceable but not exactly inspired.
Filled with brilliant filmmaking and features outstanding performances, but it's neither profound enough nor pop enough to be great -- it's mournful, serious, beautiful and, finally, pointless.
Lacks emotional depth and sweep -- but the movie still delivers the type of rousing, large-scale adventure that marked the best films of its kind
