Synopsis
In today's social media-centric landscape, the idea of “keeping up with the Jonses” has become a constant undercurrent. Now, Lauren Greenfield (the documentarian behind Thin and The Queen of Versailles), returns with another in-depth examination of obsession, this time focusing on the complicated drug that is money and the symptoms and side effects of addiction to it: materialism, celebrity culture, social status and the desire to be wealthy at any cost. Over two decades, Greenfield traveled from Los Angeles to Dubai to China to Moscow and beyond, speaking to people whose choices about money you will not believe. (Well, sadly, maybe you will). Provoking serious reflection, Generation Wealth is not about the rich, but about the desire to be wealthy, at any cost.

Metacritic
The film has its flaws, but after watching its catalog of shifty hedge fund types, Kardashians, plastic surgery addicts, bling-laden rappers and children of Hollywood royalty, you can’t help but agree.
Meaty interviews with journalist Chris Hedges, for instance, lend the film needed context and a sense of intellectual detachment.
The most curious passages of Generation Wealth are those in which the director questions her own parents and kids.
