Atom User Reviews for Freaks
The movie Freaks releases in a weird time to moviegoers. Most people rather watch all type of movies through streaming services than go to movie theaters or rather watch the most trending movies of superheroes and nostalgia. Ten years ago, Freaks would have been overshadowed by late 2000s mutant trend saruration in the mainstream like the movie Push (2009) and SyFy's Alphas. They didn't receive a fair share of the spotlight to their bigger cousin Fox's X-men and NBC's Heroes. Unlike its predecessors, this movie has a grittier and darker tone embroiled deceptively (but effective) in a family matter at the beginning, and it slowly cascading into the awaited reveal. Great story, direction and great cast. Huge kudos to Lexy Kolker's performance. The editing, cinematography and the soundtrack created its intended effects of freneticism & tension. She does a great performance. Freaks is a breeze of fresh air in a current media market saturated with superheroes and nostalgia.
Very original plot line and was engaging throughout the entire film! Would recommend!
Never expected this. Great movie!!
Metacritic
It’s watchable and intriguing stuff, yet also silly and inconsistent.
Freaks subtly subverts the superhero formula under the guise of a hallucinatory, cautionary tale of paranoia, delusion and extreme parenthood.
The final act isn’t as interesting as the first two were to me. But Hirsch impresses, as usual, as a man losing his wits and Dern always gives fair value as a canny old coot who knows more than he’s letting on.
