Moviegoers are saying
Audiences are split on Mungiu's 'Fjord': one French viewer hails it as a Palme-worthy study of a Romanian family caught in Norway's child welfare system, praising its refusal to judge, while a Romanian-born viewer calls it exploitative and says its 'neutrality' is an ideological disguise. Between them sit jokes about Norway being 'so small the bus driver is also a teacher' and a chorus of mixed reactions, with a few viewers finding the moral ambiguity more convenient than convincing.

Fun exercise where we are challenged to empathize with people who hold beliefs we likely don’t agree with, who are experiencing a particularly insidious injustice where progressivism is inverted as a weapon of prejudice. I’m curious how this will be received in the culture…

48 Not exactly uninteresting but this left me feeling cold after nearly two and a half hours of strawman arguments and tireless stabs at institutional corruption. There are caricatures on both sides, sure, although it's pretty obvious that the moral shades of grey don't…

Fjord, which Mungiu also wrote, plateaus midway through, long before a trial in the most stunning courtroom of all time is meant to liven things up. It doesn’t really, despite the prosecutor’s string of nasty insults.

Building on the discomforting courtroom unfurling of RMN—[Mungiu's] previous film, about the mechanics of mounting anti-immigrant sentiment—Fjord traces the most delicate, most pliable dynamics of modern democracy, in a tale designed as much to infuriate as to engender difficult introspection.

Stan and Reinsve both give restrained but emotional performances.
