I think this is Pawlikowski’s greatest statement in his trilogy of individuals searching for their place in a ravaged post-WWII Europe. One where nations and individuals are looking to align themselves with a strong image/symbol, but not willing to do the soul…

FATHERLAND is a deceptively understated but precise film from Paweł Pawlikowski. So muted in its storytelling that it never quite feels like it reaches its full emotional potential, yet the quiet, lingering pain running through it powerfully reflects the German psyche in…

EIN FILMISCHES WUNDER. Was kann man in 82 Minuten erzählen?

Fatherland may find refinement through restraint, but its static frames contain the weight and movement of history, making it feel, in its strongest moments, monumental and poetic.

Even though it's a short 82 minutes, a film like Fatherland requires a certain level of patience. There are missing emotional anchors tying all the themes together. In a sense, the script holds itself back from fully embracing its potential, especially for a story centering on a father-daughter duo during the peak of the Cold War. A little certainly goes a long way, but even this moody piece needed a breakthrough.

It’s the kind of film you ache through. But the aching doesn’t come from devastating romance or impossible love, as it did in Cold War, but the inherent difficulty in ever fully grasping one’s identity or coming to terms with the inevitable conflict of family.
