If they had scrapped the movie they were making and substituted it with one focusing on Bill Pullman‘s and Laurie Metcalf’s characters, they might have been onto something.

Loved all the parts set in black and white, but felt that every cut to the 1970s felt a bit forced and a bit comical, even though they were not supposed to be. Loved the camera work. Did have a hard time truly connecting with Bill, since he was just a very passive…

Anders Danielsen Lie suffering in Oslo, August 31st-mode through beautifully composed black and white images is pretty much core-cinema for me. The opening show at the Village Vanguard in 1961 feels perfectly captured, carrying vibe and tone through all that is to come. The…

It’s Evans’ genius, rather than his tragedy, that lingers long after the final frame of Gee’s utterly absorbing film.

This is not a film that elbows you into submission, but, in its minor-chord fashion, it stands comparison with great jazz movies such as Bertrand Tavernier’s ’Round Midnight and Clint Eastwood’s Bird.

For all of his anguish, Bill Evans occupied a position of grace. None of that happened by accident, and all came with a tragic cost. To the film’s credit, it allows those contradictions and countervailing forces to linger — imperfectly and awkwardly at times, and later with full force. It’s a riff, played with real skill, lingering on dissonance rather than release. How fitting.
