Thus completes Cronenberg's Viggo duology: one about a bad guy pretending to be a good guy, and the other about a good guy pretending to be a bad guy. A Dangerous Method is about horny guys pretending not to be horny.
Will MenakerAug 15, 2013"Stay alive a little longer." or "For poetic reasons, I suggest you take his blood." Here men's lives are written on their skin. Their identity is a history, a tradition that governs a culture. Any violation is meaningful. A woman's life is written on paper you can burn…
matt lynchApr 30, 2012The naked knife fight in the Sauna will stay with me forever. For me this is one of Cronenberg's best. In his double bill of exploring the world of violence, I prefer this one over A History of Violence. It is not often that Cronenberg allows any kind of absolution in…

Should be completely impersonal, but it's not. Should be a minor work, but it's not. Should be shown in film schools - for students to see how to take on a project completely for hire and make it completely theirs. All the tropes are there somehow - body horror…

Dasch lovedEastern PromisesWas intrigued the whole movie. Very dark and heavy plot. The naked fight scene was like the cherry on top 🤭
Ant0ine lovedEastern Promises9.5/10 After my very first viewing of a film where Vigo Mortense plays someone other than Aragorn I can tell you that I am not at all disappointed. This film becomes one of my favorites, the story, the evolution of characters and the narration is simply perfect. What a nugget
Undisclosed Watcher likedEastern PromisesRussian mob story. Well placed shots moving on a swivel. The story telling remained simple which made the developments more intriguing. The history lesson paired with the symbolism entertain audiences of all levels of understanding. Satisfying and gruesome watch 8.0

Never have I seen a film do all 4 character types so well. Hero (Watts), anti-hero (Mortensen), anti-villain (Cassel), and villain (Mueller-Stahl). I mean this movie is damn near perfect in every sense. Also has the 2nd greatest butt naked male fight behind Borat.
Loretta likedEastern PromisesIt is a great Russian-themed crime film. It talks a lot about life in the Russian mob and holding people accountable for their crimes. I really like the slow pace and quick transitions between scenes. Also, naked Viggo Mortensen was a nice surprise. 8/10
The Absolute Cinephile lovedEastern PromisesSuch a brilliant mob film I have been meaning to watch for a long time. Very gritty and entertaining with Viggo making you want to get Russian Orthodox tattoos. Always good to see Cassel and Watts. Fantastic casting all round!

An entertaining Russian crime movie. I enjoyed this but didn’t feel like there was anything special about it. Not much of a standout film, but not bad either. To me it’s like a Russian take on a generic American action movie.
LukeJD likedEastern PromisesMissing a certain something that keeps it far from the upper echelon of crime films imo, but Viggo is absolutely outstanding and I would’ve totally watched either a prequel or sequel entirely about him
Matt likedEastern PromisesGood crime film with unique with being Russian mafia focussed. Viggo mortetson is allways good as well found the tattoos interesting as well

It’s engrossing, and Mueller-Stahl’s mix of Old World chivalry and murderousness is scarier than Jason and Freddy combined.

In Eastern Promises, shot to envelop by the great Peter Suschitzky, Cronenberg brings us face to face with the horror of self.

Cronenberg made a movie called “The Dead Zone,” and I sometimes wonder whether, for all his formal brilliance, he has ever torn himself away from that locked-in, airless state of mind. You walk out of Eastern Promises feeling spooked and sullied, as if waking from a noisome dream.
