Despite committed performances across the board, I left the film craving a deeper, more conventionally attentive character study.
In a terrific performance that encompasses countless attitudinal, emotional and physical shifts, Joaquin Phoenix eases into the lead role with equal parts raw pain, ironic humor and eventual mellow acceptance.
The movie radiates considerable compassion, sensitively addressing issues including addiction, recovery and forgiveness. Joaquin Phoenix’s raw, wiry performance never strives for greatness, which only makes it all the more affecting.

Movie Info & Cast
Based on the memoir of the same name, this comedy-drama tells the story of John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix), an alcoholic slacker who becomes a quadriplegic after a horrific car accident. With the help of his girlfriend (Rooney Mara) and AA sponsor (Jonah Hill), he finally gets treatment and learns to his surprise that he has a talent for drawing. His irreverent and often dark newspaper cartoons (the caption for one of which provides the film’s title) soon gain a national following, and Callahan’s new lease on life is a real-life testament to the power of art.
Adapted for the screen and directed by Gus Van Sant. Also starring Jack Black Carrie Brownstein, Beth Ditto and Kim Gordon.

- Director Gus Van Sant originally planned to make this movie in the 1990s, with Robin Williams starring as John Callahan.
- When John goes to make amends with Dexter, Dexter is cleaning a flattop in a restaurant. Dexter stops scraping and leans his elbow on the edge of the flattop. Flattops get scraped when they're hot, not cold. Also, Dexter isn't wearing any kind of hair restraint, which would be violating health code in a kitchen of that type.
- Donnie: Drink water.
