Synopsis

Based on the memoir of the same name, this comedy-drama tells the story of John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix), an alcoholic slacker who becomes a quadriplegic after a horrific car accident. With the help of his girlfriend (Rooney Mara) and AA sponsor (Jonah Hill), he finally gets treatment and learns to his surprise that he has a talent for drawing. His irreverent and often dark newspaper cartoons (the caption for one of which provides the film’s title) soon gain a national following, and Callahan’s new lease on life is a real-life testament to the power of art. Adapted for the screen and directed by Gus Van Sant. Also starring Jack Black Carrie Brownstein, Beth Ditto and Kim Gordon.

Van Sant, a legendarily sensitive filmmaker, never fails to see the difficulties in Callahan’s journey, the spirit it takes to overcome them or the fact that they were all difficulties of the man’s own creation. That lifts this “uplifting” story above the twelve steps that are its natural starting point and into the realm of something more challenging than the genre conventions it otherwise adheres to.

If there’s one thing that Van Sant does very well here, it’s creating a humanizing anchor at the center of the story. Despite some distracting narrative choices and sketchy character development (especially with Mara’s character, who, of course, turns into a love interest), the film does eventually find its footing.

It’s unlikely to change anyone’s life, exactly, but it’s genial, funny, and invigorating.
