laurenFeb 14, 2019Sat on it for a year, rewatched, and yeah this is easily a top 10 for me. Few movies out there that know how to toy with emotion through music the way this one does. Can safely say it’s like a different movie the second time around. Lots of ideas being tossed around in…
KarstenAug 17, 2020This is maybe my third time watching this movie and, on this viewing, the thing I feel most is sadness. That is because, for as much as Spike Lee gestures to capital-I Issues like structural racism and police abuse, this isn’t a movie about Issues, it is a movie about…

98/100 Do the Right Thing is an exploding fire-hydrant of colliding extremes and blazing hatred, shrunk down into a tension-fueled environment overflowing with humanity, humor, danger, sadness, pain and violence. Spike Lee's masterwork doesn't just break down the…
SilentDawnOct 17, 2018Spike Lee has unequivocally proven that we do, indeed, live in a society EDIT [6/9/24]: Looking back at reviews I wrote when I was 18 years old is always a truly humbling experience. Thank you Letterboxd
NickAug 3, 2021You could pluck this movie out of 1989 and release it as a new movie in 2021 and 100% of it would still be topical. That is so devastating

The most important film in history. My dad told me stories of what happened when this movie came out and I couldn't believe it. For as many racists that hated the film, he said there was also a lot of unity between races, or at least in his neighborhood. Spike Lee is 1 of the 🐐s
Did Mookie do the right thing? You’d think the film is just a hot summer, feel good based in late 80s Bed-Stuy New York, but no. It progresses into a critical two options in the fight for civil rights and social justice. The MLK v. X dilemma. A must watch Spike Lee film 🎥

Watched this for a class, everything about the movie is great. As a first generation American, although I do consider myself an AA I grew up in an African household so seeing authentic African American culture like this has always been fascinating for me.
Wrote my film school thesis on this film. A masterpiece and was robbed from Oscar fame!

SOO GOOD I cried a bit can’t lie. Some of those scenes were so hard to watch but it was amazing. I loved the camera work and also how vast the cast of characters were. Also the way it slowly went from a slice of life at the beginning to an intense action at the climax of the movie was peak.…
This movie is the epitome of beauty in simplicity. It’s not flashy, it doesn’t try to be something special, it’s not artsy, it’s just truth. It simply makes you think, and gives you lots of questions afterwords. This is a masterpiece of character and dialogue. A hidden gem. 10/10

One of Lee's great successes with this film is that he is able to present every character, regardless of race, gender, or age, with three-dimensionality and a degree of sympathy. No one is demonized or lionized. No one individual is blamed or exonerated for the events which transpire. Each individual with significant screen time is shown to have good and bad qualities, and we come to understand what motivates them, even if we do not agree with them.
