the first forty minutes or so of this is shot largely from bogart's point of view, which means that lauren bacall does a lot of staring into your eyes. how much more can you ask from c i n e m a
theshrillestSep 22, 2014Feels very much like a crazy B-movie noir that through some magic was transmuted into A-list material performed by movie stars and blessed with big studio production values. This is particularly true of the portion of this movie that exists up to the point of Bogie going…

The third outing for Bogart and Bacall is a weird one. It's a story of a man who escapes prison after being framed for murdering his wife. The first third of the film is told in first person view and just a voiceover. Considering the leading man was probably the biggest…

rékaFeb 19, 2021I can't hide my admiration for Dark Passage (1947). One of the key pictures that made me fall in love with classic movies. And because of its inspiration I've since been busy watching five decades of films in one decade, and it's been a long wait to arrive in 1947 and be…

this movie is wild because the first 40 minutes are almost entirely POV shots—who does that?? crazy! it's also funny because it expects you to be able to imagine that humphrey bogart's voice is coming out of any face besides his own. anyway love to see lauren bacall feeding…
noraNov 22, 2020“Dark Passage” is a noir built on some of the silliest tropes of the genre, but propelled into classic status by a series of experimental directorial choices. That, and... you know — Bogie and Bacall. “Passage” pulled what can only be called an early Tom Hardy — taking…
theriverjordanOct 17, 2021So the first half hour of this film is shot like a Humphrey Bogart first person shooter, and it’s not so clear why. I mean, the guy’s one of the most famous actors in the world. Why don’t ya take advantage of that so-charismatic-it’s-gorgeous-I-guess face?! CAUSE HE…

Metacritic
An odd, atmospheric 1947 thriller with a San Francisco setting, adapted by writer-director Delmer Daves from a David Goodis novel and starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
Indeed, it is in the bizarre contacts of Mr. Bogart with shady characters such as those played by these well-directed actors that Dark Passage achieves tension and drive. Perhaps he should be given more time with them.
Dark Passage is a must see for fans of Bogart/Bacall.
