This is part of a wave of 1998/1999 movies - including The Matrix, Fight Club, American Beauty, and The Truman Show - that are explicitly or implicitly about trying to discover an alternative to the malaise of this Best of All Possible Worlds that the End of History has…
Will SloanMay 8, 2020New Line forcing Proyas to add a voiceover before the opening credits that explains the entire mystery of his big mystery movie has to be one of the dumbest studio notes in the history of Hollywood.
Matt SingerApr 4, 2013Dark City is a frustrating mess. Full of borrowed ideas, from film noir to sci-fi, Kafka to Lang, Blade Runner to Brazil, Dark City co-opts aspects originally intriguing and fails to make them its own, let alone present them coherently. It is fractured, tedious, and, worst…

SyaoranTHIS REVIEW IS FOR THE DIRECTOR'S CUT. I may prefer this over The Matrix. Allow me to explain.... Look, while I still love and can appreciate The Matrix and you can look and see I gave it just a half star less than this one—by the end of the day, if we analyze everything…
Rafael "Mister Movie" JovineAug 23, 2015With the exception of the very cool "tuning" sequences I honestly don't think this really has much up its sleeve other than being consistently gorgeous and lovingly production-designed. The noir backdrop and paranoid metatext aren't really synthesized into anything new or…

"When was the last time you remember doing something during the day?" The only "something" I remember "doing during the day" for the past week and a half is listening to Dark City commentaries while I work from home, and I think I might slowly be turning into Wolenski.…
ScreeningNotesJun 3, 2020Everything about this movie looks and is cool. Smart, medium budget sci-fi.
Will MenakerFeb 12, 2023peak neo-noir, a daring synthesis of every implicit metaphysical assumption in the dark side of american cinema, a world of endless night where our lives are ruled by a mysterious fate, the shadowy metropolis, the paranoid killer, the determined detective, the nightclub…

👍👍 Unique sci-fi flick with a great cast, atmopshere and concept. Very bizarrely shot/edited - fitting in this case. Parts of the ending were clever, and some parts beautiful, though the fight was a tad undercooked. Good music and SFX, used sparingly. Shot of the city among the stars was…
This could've been a Hellraiser movie, tbh. I mean, they already got what looks like cenobites, just throw in some body horror and uncomfortable sex scenes. In all seriousness, this was actually a really cool sci-fi concept, but it could use some tweaking so it could've packed more of a punch.
Another movie I absolutely ADORE! Highly influenced by Blade Runner (1982) & Metropolis (1927). Themes similar to the Matrix (1999) except this came out a year before. Hugely underrated. Majorly recommended to fans of sci-fi that asks questions about what it means to be human.

A dark mistery movie with sci-fi vibes that works right. Dark City make an interesting story about humanity, feelings and what is what make you who you are. P.S: If you can get it, watch the edited version, the original one has a part that bottle part of the final twist...
It’s definitely a unique idea but we just jump into this world alongside, not knowing anything like the protagonist. It has the noir style of Blade Runner mixed with the reality-bending mystery of The Matrix before The Matrix even existed.

It was ok. Very unique plot, but the overall execution and acting from the main guy seemed lacking. If it was redone, I'd definitely watch. I feel like directors and actors now would know how to handle this movie. 6.4/10
I really liked this movie. the vibe felt like a lost 90s FMV (meaning freaking awesome). however, I felt like this movie blew it's load wayyy too early. it also explains way too much. I need to see the detector's cut.
