COWARD feels like what you’d get if “Sing Sing” and “All Quiet On The Western Front” met and discovered a tender romance between them. Beautifully directed by Lukas Dhont, he handles the war scenes with appropriate brutality and grit while showing how performance art can…
Matt NegliaMay 18, 2026I love how Lukas Dhont makes films and sees the world, and I love how this takes a clear step up while preserving that very candid, earnest intimacy that I think few filmmakers are shameless enough to embrace. To trust as being enough to make the whole thing a bit epic.…

Tiff26 #3 Powerhouse performances by the two leads, though Campagne carries more weight. The first two acts outshine the third.
Alex Buse lovedCowardThe tension is palpable. Pierre’s raw love and certainty is a rare and special sensation in a cold, cruel world at war.

It’s Dhont at his most tender and his most mature, crafting a stunning piece of work and one of the best films of the year, of any year.

Above all, it’s a sensitive piece of storytelling that reaches a place of hopefulness, not in light of the tough subject matter of war, but in spite of it.

Unlike other period tales of hidden queer love, including one that debuted at this same festival a year ago, Dhont isn’t interested in dripping his canvas in tragedy. He’s going to leave you with a glimmer of hope. Actually, more than a glimmer. A wry smile of anticipation that suggests all isn’t lost and love can find a way.
