“I sure hope you’re not gonna be a hard case…” Despite his own efforts as co-writer of the screenplay, Author Don Pierce hated the adaptation of his defining novel. He thought Paul Newman was miscast, he detested Lalo Schiffrin’s score (despite suggesting the banjo to…
Christopher McQuarrieFeb 4, 2026You think the egg sequence will be as good as it gets and then they immediately hit you with the banjo….15(?) minutes of newman at his peak
KarstenNov 25, 2023Revisited the magnificent COOL HAND LUKE as part of the "Kate's Never Seen It" List. This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Newman's performance is flawless, and you almost hear the primal scream of America circa 1967 ringing underneath the movie. Among dozens of…

caitFeb 23, 2014Paul Newman was a legendary, gifted actor, and when I hear his name the first thing that comes to mind is Cool Hand Luke. The film is more than just a prison story, it is a fantastic character study about a man whom is incapable of conforming to the rules of society, both…
Scott AndersonDec 13, 2014When he's eating the eggs and starts doing squats and the camera rocks back and forth with him, oh, it's just the best thing ever. Conrad Hall, what a champ.

An American classic and an inventive take on The Odyssey. Classic cinematic moments and quotes that hold to this day. I could actually see this being modernized in some really impactful ways today. Still focused on the hero’s journey but with firmer criticisms of authoritarian politics. Anyway if…
Extremely well-made film. The turmoil & desperation is portrayed greatly particularly by a leading Paul Newman. The film takes a steady pace & lets you live in the environment without much happening, which isn’t a bad thing. The ending is bittersweet, but executed very well
Really good film that is at once tragic and inspiring. Paul Newman plays a winsome lead character to perfection. George Kennedy as Dragline is a secondary highlight. Really transports you to another time and place with great screenplay and themes of man vs "the system."

A throwback to when films were simple, entertaining, and well written. A simple narrative that keeps the audience entertained. No philosophy, no CGI just a good script shot well and paired with great soundtrack.
This is just a classic movie, tons of media have drawn from this movie and it shows why Funnily enough I only found this movie because of a Family Guy episode

Kinda boring and pointless for a prison break movie. Why don’t you shove a couple more eggs in your mouth Luke
Paul Newman. Incredible. Funny, strong, handsome. Every girl wants him and every guy wants to be him.
