City of Ghosts (2003)

First time watch- was hoping for a little more James Caan, but the movie is pretty good. Matt Dillon is one of those actors who I feel is pretty underrated. Every time I see him in a film, I look him up to see what he's working on. He's solid here and a pretty good…

It wasn’t uncommon for a noir hero to be a sympathetic male figure who committed a crime against his better judgment. When he wasn't deliberately manipulated into doing so by a femme fatale, his internal conflict (postwar PTSD, unresolved Oedipal issues) was portrayed as…

Despite the lesser reviews for City of Ghosts I was still excited to check this film out considering it is Dillon’s only non-documentary directorial effort. The film also stars both Dillon and the late James Caan so I really thought it had some potential. Sadly, it does…

Dillon's directorial debut is an absolute vibe. And a pretty unnerving one. If your looking for a propulsive narrative you can certainly look elsewhere but I found the film to be a gripping watch. Like most of us, I've never been to Cambodia but what Dillon and co-writer…

Say what you want about Matt Dillon but he knows how to cast himself perfectly! A genuinely surprising little neo-noir set in Cambodia, full of grime, violence and beauty — not to mention regrets, broken hearts and disappointments. Aka, perfect angsty expat…
