Weird that I hadn't caught up with this! Combination of Dominik's use of film stock + lighting to create a series of exaggerated color palettes and the claustrophobic locations and framing perfectly accentuate Chopper Read's stilted self-awareness and eventual bursts of…
Josh LewisMar 23, 2012Fuck, this was good. Amazing. Eric Bana is crazy-good, phenomenally phenomenal.. Extremely similar to Bronson. Both have thundering performances and both are about infamous, violent criminals spending much of their life behind bars. Very similar in style also.

meyiMay 23, 2022Chopper is a nasty little film, one which is happy to embrace a super violent approach. Thick, sticky blood seeps from the screen. The opening text tells us that Chopper is not a biography of the titular lead, and the film certainly unfolds as a mesh of fact and fiction. It…

This fictionalized, frequently stomach-churning biography of Australian criminal Mark Chopper Read features the most bloody ear-severing scene since Reservoir Dogs.

An impressionistic portrait of the seductive nature of evil.

Its dabs of dark comedy and stabs of gore, still rings with a sense of the real. It's electric-charged.
