Moviegoers are saying
ChaO delivers absolutely stunning Studio 4°C animation that had viewers mesmerized by its vibrant, painterly visuals and unique character designs, but audiences found themselves torn between visual brilliance and narrative disappointment. While reviewers consistently praised the film's gorgeous animation style and ChaO's adorable fish-form design, many felt the shallow love story and underdeveloped characters didn't match the artistic ambition.

cadyb4Jun 19, 2025Plot wise, not developed enough for my tastes. A very shallow interpretation of love. Chao does so much to learn about humans and their culture. What does the MC do other than try to “study” her anatomy… Plus, we learn basically nothing about Chao as a person. What are her…

FoxHoodieApr 11, 2026Stephan must have been high on something for not thinking ChaO looked absolutely gorgeous as a fish. Like, damn, she’s like what the makers of Shark Tale thought they were cooking with Lola and Angie! 😍

A fun and expressive flick that is equal parts wildly inventive and grounded in heart. Probably my favorite movie I’ve seen in the past year, the whole experience was just phenomenal in my eyes. Very unique animation, great voice over work, and a really nice story.
Romil Jain lovedChaOThe future is important for all creatures not only Humans & All you need is the bare necessities. Post a break up scare the movie was more impactful than it would have been. Understanding the counterparty’s intention is sometimes more important.

The most enchanting thing about “ChaO” isn’t necessarily its hyperpoptimism, but the many little ways in which its breezy and arresting style reflects its creators’ lightly held Utopianism.

The film moves so fast that you don’t have to dwell on its missteps for long. For every moment that feels a bit too weird, there’s a scene that’s absolutely hilarious or heartbreakingly sincere. This fairy tale is particularly twisted, but that just makes its happily-ever-after ending feel all the more earned.
