Moviegoers are saying
Audiences split almost down the middle on this Barney-gone-wrong horror-comedy, and the fault line is tone. Fans who came for the 'Barney but demonic' hook say it's 'hilarious and entertaining for a horror movie and satire' and single out Strappy the backpack as a 'real one,' while detractors say it 'relied more on comedy than on horror' and that the 'Barney TV show' setup never delivers real scares. Most agree it's an aesthetically bold, weird film, but it's far more of a midnight-Adult-Swim trip than a frightening one.

Issy likedBuddySomeone brought their baby to this showing?? The baby kept crying and coughing😭
dbaa watched_neutraldBuddyY’all lied. “Goriest,” “creepiest,” “should be banned”? PLEASE. This isn’t horror; it’s a goofy kids’ adventure movie with monsters and a little blood. Amazing, original premise, but terrible execution. I expected horror and got Jumanji. So underwhelming.

Joey is "meh" onBuddyThe whole concept was very unique and the beginning was good. First off bro could teleport then proceeds not to do it ever again. Mom plot line went nowhere, big miss imo. As someone who watches a lot of horror movies, I haven’t seen this idea done but executed poorly. 5.8/10.

7.5/10 Probably the strangest movie I’ve seen this year. I honestly had no idea where to rank this. Definitely succeeded in giving off the Barney/teletubbies type show vibe. Absolute rollercoaster, had no idea where this thing was going to go. The kills were pretty gruesome and the storytelling was…

By and large, Buddy proves that high-concept, short-form premises can be expanded to a feature format effectively, so long as the final film isn’t too winky and its stakes feel grounded.

The movie is a one-joke premise, cute and colorful but unsatisfyingly fleshed out.

In truth, Buddy is not especially scary, its many kill scenes staged for laughs. But if this horror-comedy makes an obvious point — television shows meant for kids sure are weird — Kelly finds enough fresh ways to exploit the idea.
