chelsea 🍋Oct 10, 2014Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a bit of an anomaly. It's a film that is frightened of its own material. The reasons are manifold. Capote (who wrote the novella) wanted Marilyn Monroe for the part of Holly Golightly; the weed-smoking alcoholic prostitute who has a casual…

Audrey Hepburn is the original manic pixie dream girl. Even though this is the most famous Hepburn movie, I’ve seen two lesser known ones before it (The Children’s Hour and My Fair Lady). The cat is my favorite character. Also all of the hats are quite the fashion statement.

So Unbelievably Boring that I forgot I watched this until it was brought up that the cat is named cat— I now remember being forced to watch this sitting on the couch with my mom. She was so excited to show me while I was considering my many options of escape. I failed. So here.
It can be faulted as a narrative and it doesn't take a serious moral view. But the people who querulously insist on such points have clearly not surrendered to Miss Hepburn's magic spell.

The movie still looks very good, and you'd need a heart of stone not to love the cat. [Review of re-release]
Now Breakfast at Tiffany’s is iconic in fashion circles and Holly Golightly seen as a proto-Carrie Bradshaw – a trailblazer for women who use their ovens for shoe storage. Re-released by the BFI, it’s as ditsy and delightful as ever – with charm enough to forgive it plenty. [Review of re-release]
