Funny how you can see just about every single career interest here like they thought they might not get another stab at it. The dark, fatalistic sense of humor, the sweaty, southern existential neo-noir/western vibe, the cruel combating forces of self-interest and…

Molly LaichApr 21, 2019I love these Minnesota boys so god damn much.

LOVE Dan Hedaya lookin' like a psychopathic Andy Kaufman and John Getz lookin' like a traumatized John Ritter. Funny how strong the Coens' fascination with dramatic irony has been since the very beginning! Absolutely dig the theme in the score here, too– I feel like I…
demi adejuyigbeJul 25, 2017i can't believe the coen brothers invented anxiety in 1984??? THIS ALMOST GAVE ME A HEART ATTACK.....
LucyMay 26, 2020I've always liked the story of how this movie was funded, the Coens going to all the dentists in Michigan and asking for money. I think more movies should be funded by dentists

Will MenakerApr 9, 2019An exercise in pure atmosphere, from the dimly lit road to the neon of the bar and the darkness of an empty apartment. The story is simple, the dialogue is minimal, and the score is wonderful. Everyone is excellent, but M. Emmet Walsh’s performance as the private…

The Coen Bros. had their style and voice straight from their debut. Creatively written, structured, shot and directed. Great performances, particularly long-time collaborator Frances McDormand. Sprinkles the makings of Fargo and No Country for Old Men throughout, excellent debut
pretty stellar crime noir film that serves as the coen’s debut. i personally didn’t find it too funny, but the confounding narrative and overall conflict is engaging with enough action to satisfy. excellent cinematography and writing with the wonderful frances mcdormand

Quite possibly the smoothest film I’ve ever seen, perfect transitions. Although it’s far from a perfect film, three are no observable issues in the story telling process, everything is incredibly efficient.
danny boyle criterion closet recommended. he was not lying; this is up there with some of my favorite coen flicks. PI was my favorite character. frances mcdormand is so pretty

This was a meh until the very end, and then it all clicked. Extremely slow. Painstakingly slow. Yet nothing is simple about this one.
Solid movie. Not my favorite Coen bros (and I think their next, Miller’s Crossing, is much better), but this is solid.
