refreshing take on the apocalypse film. feels like something everyone would be talking about 10 years ago and something that would be anything but a comfort watch one year ago. probably my go-to recommendation for thanksgiving 2021

Even now, after surviving for more than 100 years and almost as many supposed deaths, the movies are still full of surprises. I submit to you the following as further proof of that phenomenon: At a time when feature-length sci-fi is dominated by franchise spectacle, someone…

Like many Apple TV+ originals this year (Palmer, Cherry and most notably Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry and Coda), Finch proved to be another great success for the studio. Following Finch Weinberg (Tom Hanks) on a post-apocalyptic earth decimated by a…

A simple, well-worn story told with great care and emotion is sometimes all you need. Loved it. Jeff playing catch with Goodyear while Finch watches finally broke me. Seamus the dog is third billed, Best Supporting Canine incoming.

I can't believe I ended up shedding a tear over a movie built around a tin can, a dog, and one solitary man. God damn it, Hanks. I kept thinking, Sapochnik, Sapochnik… why does that name ring a bell. Then I realised, he’s one of the great directors from GOT. And, on a…

Despite the ticking clock of Finch’s rapidly progressing illness, the movie doesn’t build up much urgency or excitement. The script is pretty thin, almost all premise and little incident. But director Miguel Sapochnik has the eye to make this world compellingly hostile and bleak, and that counts for something.

Among the charms of Finch is its willingness not to overexplain, trusting our patience while involving us visually.

Finch is inconsistent, but ultimately charming, even as it will likely be a footnote next to the Hanks star vehicles it’s desperately trying to emulate.
