Synopsis

Ava (Jessica Chastain) is a deadly mercenary who works for a black ops organization, traveling the globe and specializing in high profile hits. Ava's career takes a bad turn when a high profile job goes wrong due to faulty information provided to her. With a botched hit (as well as a track record for questioning the validity of her targets), Ava is told to take a hiatus until the heat blows over, but secretly the head of the organization, Simon (Colin Farrell), has ordered a hit on her to ensure nothing traces back to the company. With the recent death of her father, Ava decides to go back home to Boston and attempt to mend her relationship with her mother and sister, Judy, though the homecoming proves to be far from happy as the years of estrangement have created resentment. To complicate things further Ava's ex-fiancé, Michael (Common), is now in a relationship with Judy, and involved with an underground gambling ring that Ava knows all too well from her younger days. Ava now has to save her family and herself from multiple threats, while battling her own demons.

There isn't a single novel moment or exciting twist or decent action beat in this entire misbegotten endeavor. Aggressively generic, cheap-looking and ugly, embarrassingly acted, and haphazardly edited. You've seen better terrible TV pilots. Stop Tate Taylor before he kills…

Jessica Chastain can do no wrong, and a few scenes can be fun, but for the most part, it was pretty bad. I really do think Chastain brings a lot more to this movie than she has any right to. Obviously, it isn’t her best performance, but she isn’t bad. The script is cheesy…

Family drama? Contract killer action movie? Both???? My favorite part was when Jessica Chastain jumped out of the water like Jason Voorhees ready to kill a muthafuka. My second favorite part was when Gena Davis just existed on camera (I feel like I haven’t seen her…

I mainly wanted to watch this because of the fight scene with John Malkovich and Colin Farrell. For which it was short. Regardless, I like any assassin female film. Sure the action sequences were week and not that great, but I do support my gal Jessica Chastain and her…

Why doesn't Hollywood know what to do with a female assassin!? Why do they make it seem so difficult!? Surely there's a way to do this kind of movie without it being painfully generic, embarrassingly cheap and awkward as hell? I await the day for someone to get this…

it felt like there was no good guy, but you were still secretly hoping the main character would pull through.

A movie with more potential directions than its globe-trotting-assassin heroine has wigs, “Ava” offers moments that suggest it might have succeeded as an action thriller, a dysfunctional family drama, or a character study. Since it commits fully to none of these, the results are the sort of bland bang-bang-pow that keep Nicolas Cage and Bruce Willis afloat in between movies that critics actually like, or even see.

Chastain is utterly convincing in another tough-as-nails role. If audiences stick with the movie, it's largely thanks to her movie-star charisma, which almost compensates for the increasingly ridiculous plot. Malkovich and Farrell seem to understand they are A-list talent in B-movie roles, and relish the opportunity.
