70 I do think it's fair to say that James Gray overreaches a tad with this one, mostly in the intersection between race and class. There's just not enough nuance to Johnny's character depiction to fully contextualize Paul's guilt and privilege as a moral center. The…

David SimsSome movies are less than their best intentions. It’s difficult to fully parse writer/director James Gray’s white guilt manifesto Armageddon Time, his follow-up to his sad-dad opus Ad Astra, without falling under its well-meaning spell. But we’ve seen this movie before, the…

"I'm a white Jewish boy but I'm not racist btw. I recognize that white Jewish people have a tenuous proximity to white privilege. My friends at school say bigoted slurs but I didn't say anything because this is actually a defense mechanism and a mode of self-preservation.…
SupremeLemon (지존레몬)Oct 12, 2022[this is a profile I did of James Gray during the days leading up to his hometown premiere of Armageddon Time, but it digs a bit deeper into some of the things I touched upon in my review of the movie last May] “I’m tired,” James Gray said over Zoom from Los Angeles,…
davidehrlichNov 23, 2022Gray has time and time again proved to have an exceptional understanding of classical melodrama and seeing him clumsily apply this skill to autobiographical memory is certainly of interest. Its big writerly moments and performances frequently feel like they’re in search of…

There are any number of memorable images from James Gray’s “Ad Astra,” a singularly introspective space adventure in which Brad Pitt journeys to the outer limits of our solar system just to hear Daddy Lee Jones tell him that he doesn’t care, but none have stayed with me…
davidehrlichNov 26, 2022Such a perfect other side of the see-saw with FABELMANS that it might as well have been on purpose.

Heavy & tense for a coming of age film, at times even somber & touching. Behind each scene I always got the sense of something dark looming over MC (sound design utilized very well to submerge you into his dissociation) which becomes more clear as the backdrop of the rising…
I didn’t feel that this movie brought anything really new to its segment, except maybe a more realistic ending for it’s time period, but the excellent acting by Strong, Hopkins, and Hathaway kept me interested enough
Great coming-of-age film that does a great job documenting the state of America transitioning to the conservative Reagan era of the early 80s. Also covers race relations in which the young character learns the hard way but through the lens of being white and privileged.

The only thing saving this from a “dislike”, is the incredible cast. Jeremy Strong is incredible, and Hathaway and Hopkins both do their best. For me, the themes were too heavy handed, and never really felt like it landed any points, and the ending was just garbage.
A complex issue of racism and prejudice in America through generations, from the Holocaust to 1980s New York. Great acting and writing. The ending left me a little stumped. Seemed to fizzle out.

the cast is perfect but it would have been more interesting if it had been less slow, it's easy to get bored... what a pity !
Felt like a nothing burger of a movie, I don’t think I was the target demographic which is incredibly fine.

Racial profiling. As always makes a black person look bad. Very disappointed with the movie. Waste of money.
