Why bother with the plot when you could have just made beautiful dance sequences for two hours? I mean this as a positive review.

Vincente Minnelli's movie Paris > real Paris
Patrick WillemsJul 25, 2018If I ever got to witness Gene Kelly tap dancing right in front of me, I would’ve stood there sobbing
tyOct 26, 2024I don’t know what’s sadder: films not being as beautiful as this one, or films not having Gene Kelly anymore.

Best Picture Oscar winner 1952 (24th Academy Awards) My Rating: 7/10 Nominated for 8 Oscar’s and won 6. It also won the inaugural golden globe best pic. Can’t go wrong with Gene Kelly in a musical. But it’s not Singin in the Rain. Leslie Caron’s film debut and she is just absolutely gorgeous.…
While it has some very funny bits and amazing singing and dancing, it also has some huge problems when it comes to its depiction of sexual harassment. Also, the seemed to replace the last 15 minutes of the movie with a dance number instead of plot and dialogue.

was expecting a well rounded musical since this won best picture but the plot kind of got lost somewhere. Nevertheless it was incredibly enjoyable, beautiful sets and even lovelier costumes. Perfect dancing and singing.
I can appreciate the talent and the creativity. There were a lot of really cool and impressive aspects but it was also slow, dated and at times a bit too extravagant for my taste.

the ballet sequences are fabulous, but the rest of this film lacks direction. not bad by any means, but somewhat plodding.
Feels very modern for its time. I love the incorporation of dance and tap. Great camerawork

The real reasons to see An American in Paris are for the Kelly dance sequences, the closing ballet, the Gershwin songs, the bright locations, and a few moments of the ineffable, always curiously sad charm of Oscar Levant.
An American In Paris is muddled as an artistic statement, yet unsatisfying as conventional Hollywood product.
