Possibly one of the worst movies I've seen. 30-45 min into the movie i start getting bored and hoping it will be better at the hour mark. The only saving grace is the all star cast. Sadly the script did not match the ability of the great cast. I contemplated leaving the theater several times, I wish I did.
Terrible
This could have been a fantastic movie if it wasn't so long and the beginning story isn't set for us so fast our heads spin. All of the cast did a great job, but the story had too much filler. it should have been 45 minutes less and it would have been fantastic!
I love the cast, the sets, but the script was just not great
With its cleverly and charmingly told anti-fascist story, it is probably the most important film of the year! Bale, Washington and Robbie are great!
Good movie, just too long. If the movie took out a lot of the pointless flashback scenes of how everyone met (which doesn’t matter in the plot) it would’ve been alot better
Ehh, okay I guess
It’s pretty slow and not so good for majority of the movie but it gets better at the very end
Acting, story, truth all top notch. And boring!
it was fine
I have never left a movie in the middle but I seriously considered leaving this one. It was slow and meandering and pointless. So many big stars and nothing for them to do. It was awful. Do not waste your time.
The cast is the main reason to see this movie, and the main reason it was made. It's certainly not the story that matters most. David O. Russell's pretentious meandering takes too long to do anything. About 90% of the photography consists of upward shots at chest height, which becomes a boring gimmick . The tension and danger dissipates after (SPOILER ALERT) the cops are no longer after the kaolin characters, and the tension with Alessandro Nivola goes nowhere. Also, the guy with the bag of money just ACCIDENTALLY blurts out the real name of the group?! Quite silly and unbelievable. The good stuff: Rami Malek, Zoe Saldaña, Chris Rock, Mike Meyers (loved him), Michael Shannon, Taylor Swift....the whole cast is great, really. The themes, while EXTREMELY heavyhanded, are appreciated. If only the film were made by a more efficient director who could keep the tension up, rather than relying on philosophical chatter and didacticism, this would have been much better.
Pretty convoluted. To bad.
Good acting by all but it was just boring.
So they only stopped Trump for another four years
The depiction of the story was not very engaging. The beginning felt dry and bland. Tay Swift's acting was not that great in this film either, did not feel authentic. Had the lines been better along with the storytelling, it would've been good.
Wonderful cast of characters, interesting direction, cool mystery and clever writing. If you like mystery and some old fashioned fun you’ll enjoy this movie. Highly recommend
Great cast! A bit slow but if you are a crime, old school, mystery fan then this movie is for you. I can see why people don’t like this movie but I personally liked it myself. Not bad. Anya Taylor-Joy is freaking beautiful!!!
Metacritic
It’s been seven years since the writer-director David O. Russell’s last movie. At its frequent best, “Amsterdam” makes it worth the wait.
In the case of David O. Russell’s jaw-droppingly terrible, aggressively tasteless, profoundly unfunny and interminably dull conspiracy thriller and would-be comedy “Amsterdam,” the all-star ensemble has less chemistry than a high school freshman on the first day of class.
Russell’s film is not remotely playable. Amsterdam so badly wants to be a light romp with heavy-duty meaning that it cannot help but be flattened by a sagging self-exhaustion. It is an exercise in interminable madcappery.
