Ain't no man with swagger like 'Zel. The way he says "my man" earns 5 stars by itself.

JaySep 9, 2023The final 10 minutes feel truly momentous and hardly anything else does. Crowe and Denzel toe-to-toe, trading sweeping proclamations about the past and the future, refugees from their chosen lifestyles connecting to reroute their destinies; Josh Brolin splattering a sun…

Something that usually goes completely ignored that I would like to focus on is Ruby Dee’s arc as Mama Lucas, specifically how the relationship between Frank and his mother may be limited in terms of screen time yet still struck me as one of the more powerful moments in the…

the impossible fact that we have to face is that there is no simple figurehead, no big bad guy that can embody everything that we hate about society, there's no one to ultimately blame, no grand evil plan put in place by some egomaniac. dracula isn't hanging out in his…
comrade_yuiAug 19, 2022This is mostly fine/competent (or at least my general enjoyment of seeing character actors i like operating in this genre milieu/fun 70s period detail is carrying it), and Denzel does manage to locate some depth to this arc by the end but quite a few stretches of it have…
Josh LewisMar 23, 2015Everyone in law enforcement in the U.S. in the sixties found it impossible to believe that anyone could challenge the Mafia in terms of organized crime. Drugs, Racketeering, Prostitution, they ran it all. Even when the spiraling drug epidemic threatened to destroy a…

Absolutely loved American Gangster! 🔥 Denzel Washington was phenomenal — powerful, intense, and magnetic. The story, the style, the tension — everything hit perfectly. One of those films that sticks with you long after it ends! 🎬
A really good crime film about the rise and fall of a drug lord. Played by Denzel Washington. There’s also another story line about a detective trying to take down Washington’s character. Played by Russell Crow. It’s based on true events that make it more compelling to watch.

Rating: 8.4/10 American Gangster is a modern masterpiece of the gangster genre, with a sprawling, engrossing narrative and towering performances from Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. Director Ridley Scott crafts a brilliant "rise and fall" saga that's a compelling character…
one of the things I enjoy about Ridley Scott is that he's not gonna tell you everything. You have to pay attention to see what the story is telling you. Frank Lucas didn't become a multimillionaire mobster quick, and Ridley let a lot of that happen off screen. I really liked how that was done

This movie is outstanding and does a great job telling this true story, the film is entertaining and has good action, the seriousness and crime aspect are intriguing and acting is great, can get a bit long but overall this is a really good gangster/crime thriller, 7.8/10
Another movie to show Denzel’s diversity. I do think it could’ve been shorter. Violence and emotions were portrayed very good in this movie. Also surprised me that Ridley Scott directed it. I had been meaning to watch this movie. It didn’t disappoint and stands out.
It's a vast interconnected crime drama with deep complex well-written characters played by some of the best actors around. It's gritty and dark with good flashes of the Ridley Scott style. It references the French Connection. Denzel Washington is one of the best.

Call it the black Scarface or the Harlem Godfather or just one hell of an exciting movie.
It's workmanlike and engrossing, but what sticks in the mind are Frank and Richie, not what anybody does.
Absorbing, exciting at times and undeniably entertaining, and is poised to be a major commercial hit. But great it's not.
