The ocean scares the crap out of me. It holds more secrets than answers and harnesses a power within its tempestuous nature that should be treated with the greatest of respect. All is Lost is Everyman at sea. Its minimalistic nature and simple story of survival are like…
DirkHDec 7, 2013Dude, God, why you hatin' on Robert Redford? A few dodgy special effects and music cues aside, this is another year-end catch-up winner, about on even footing in my mind with GRAVITY in the Tales Of Impossible Survival category. It's less technically impressive than…
Matt SingerJan 31, 2014I used to spend summers sailing with my uncle and cousin. Sometimes just a quick day-sail around the bay after my uncle got home from work, and before it got dark. Club races on the weekends. A few times a summer we’d go on a weekend long cruise; sometimes longer. …

One actor. No dialogue. On a yacht/raft the whole time. Boring right? Nope.
EvanOct 8, 2013(aka "Life of Guy"): MacGyver as an existential dilemma, vividly depicts survival but frustratingly fails to question it.
davidehrlichMay 1, 2026Mmm...monotonous. I bow in respect to this being a different kind of movie than normal - a legendary actor in the final years of his life taking on a movie all by himself, virtually no dialogue, no crucial plot machinations to worry about, it's practical and procedural and…

Today I decided to re-visit J.C. Chandor's All is Lost. I wanted to experience the magic of this film from the perspective of someone who had already seen it once, and I'm so glad that I made that decision. It jumped to the spot of my second favorite film of 2013, and I…
Eli HayesSep 21, 2025This film works not only as a smartly executed nautical thriller, but also as an allegory for the end of life: Our age is catching up with us and we’re trying hard to outrun it. Then one day an accident besets us, say a broken hip. We struggle to heal ourselves, but our…
Channing PomeroySep 20, 2025ALL IS LOST is such a brutal watch. One man, barely any dialogue, just pure survival and the ocean slowly stripping everything away… it’s like being trapped inside the sinking ship with Robert Redford’s character. Redford carries the whole film with nothing but expressions…

It’s sad the modern audience cannot appreciate masterful filmmaking like this. This film is an experience that highlights the extremes a man goes to in order to survive. It tells a beautiful story, which film is meant to do. It is an art, and All is Lost is a spectacle. 9/10
Just fair warning, it is a bit slow, but this is done to build tension, which it does multiple times, but does tend to drag a bit. It’s difficult to be action packed when you’re lost at sea. I am glad I watched it, but it is far from my favorite Robert Redford films.

Really good survival movie. Invokes strong emotions of desperation and loneliness with a good payoff. A creative and deep yet simple adventure. 7.8
No matter what happens to you, never never never lose hope. Hope, hope to the last! No one ever succeeds without the help of others.

A beautifully devastating movie with outstanding acting. I still think of this movie years after watching it
Minimalism at its finest, only one actors, little to no dialogue, just a man at odds with Mother Nature
