Moviegoers are saying
Akira stands as an undisputed masterpiece that continues to blow minds decades later, with reviewers consistently praising its groundbreaking animation and visceral impact while admitting they often don't fully understand what's happening. This is a film that burrows into your psyche and refuses to leave, offering a 'horrifyingly grandiose tragedy' that melds post-war trauma with teenage angst in Neo-Tokyo's neon-soaked ruins.

adamboltApr 23, 2015"The future is not a straight line. It is filled with many crossroads. There must be a future that we can choose for ourselves." Akira is one of the most important Japanese animated films of all time, and not simply because of the technical landmark it achieved in…
ScreeningNotesMay 28, 2019I really just didn’t know what was going on 90% of the time but it’s a vibe.

raiMay 6, 2020Akira is one of those films that I appreciate more than I like. The animation is very good and several of the messages it wants to convey are solid, but I wasn't completely connected to its characters and although entertaining it wasn't completely emotionally satisfying for…

oleffNov 19, 2014Probably the most galvanic and visceral example of a nation's collective psychic fallout since Honda's GODZILLA. Simultaneously dreading and anticipating a return to power.
matt lynchMar 13, 201694/100 An aggressive tour de force of influential animation, tangible world-building, inferiority complexes, biker gangs, giant teddy bears, and overwhelming sequences of violence. It stays burrowed in your psyche, ruining a certain, seemingly simple nerve and, in the…

Top tier art style. Definitely watch sub if available (always). Though this was a cool film, I found it incoherent. I had no clue what was happening and didn’t grasp the timeline. I need to revisit this later on.
SpindlyMan dislikedAkiraThe art and world are beautiful. As for the story, I don’t even know what was happening. About an hour in it gets pretty strange and incoherent. I’ve tried watching this twice and I just can’t get it.
Jackdiddlywack lovedAkiraAbsolutely iconic on so many fronts.

I usually like odd or quirky elements in movies, but this one was just too bizarre in a different, almost transhumanistic way that wasn't really for me. I couldn't latch onto the characters and the story was puzzling. But I recognize its influence. Maybe I'll rewatch it sometime.
Jackson likedAkira7/10 The art style is amazing and the animation is fantastic, very cool concept and was super interesting but lost me towards the end as I was understanding the plot at first but it does not explain much and then it just leaves you wondering what happened. Gonna read the boxset.
Nick Dubberly is "meh" onAkiraI know I’m 37 years late to the party, but I finally watched Akira! I have to admit the opening sequence was visually stunning! The story however, just wasn’t for me. I’ll probably get bashed by the anime purists and be called stupid for not getting it, but that’s ok with me.

Adapted by Katsuhiro Otomo from his sprawling, post-apocalyptic cyberpunk tale of government conspiracies, street gangs, and psychic powers that can save or destroy the world, it's still an all-time classic, and has never looked better.
