    This might not be perfect, but Helen Mirren spends much of the runtime lurking about with her bob, guns, and knives, only to disappear into the darkness after saying something cryptic. If that isn’t enough for you I think you simply cannot be satisfied.

For whatever it’s worth, A Talent for Murder is the definition of a competent mediocrity. Yet Highsmith’s oeuvre—which did everything to transcend the early equivalent of “airport” novels through searing explorations of misogyny, class, and the unknowable quality of every person—was anything but. She deserves better than specialty-box-office filler.

We’re being led down a road of twists and turns but none really jolt or surprise as much as we expect, the rug never really being pulled, just gently tugged at. Mirren and Ehrenreich are a formidably talented duo, and I can’t imagine anyone else lifting this quite so well, but they’re not given anything truly vicious enough to work with. Knives are plunged, drinks are spiked and guns are fired but A Talent for Murder is lacking in real blood.

It looks sumptuous and proceeds at an absorbing slow-burn pace as it reveals itself to be about doppelgangers and identity, the line between fiction and reality, and whether deep down we all have the capacity for murder.
