This was not what I was expecting and I mean that in the best way possible. What most of us probably have gotten used to is a sensationalist or manipulative approach in 'big' films that deal with 'big' subjects. And even though 12 Years a Slave has moments where it's…

Eli HayesJan 12, 2014One of the reasons why I love cinema are films like 12 Years a Slave. Feel what I felt after it ended, is the reason why I love cinema. See performances like the one's in this film, are the reason why I love cinema. Being moved by every single frame that you are…

aaronSep 7, 2013a staggering portrait of compassion & how evil is the sum of a million small apathies. historic in all respects. a masterpiece in part because of how it achieves a vital & complex inclusiveness by refusing to betray its specificity. i'll double back on this later, and…

Holly-BethMar 18, 2015The multitude of moments containing potent bursts of pure evil and sorrow are almost too numerous to count, but each one adds up to something of a vivid nightmare. The harsh rattling of chains against the inky blackness. A piece of paper letting off small fragments of light…

white people only like this movie because they feel personally responsible for slavery
Emma loved12 Years a SlaveJust phenomenal acting all around. Every shot of this movie is intentional. Yes movies like this are uncomfortable to watch, being confronted with history can be uncomfortable. But do yourself a favor and be uncomfortable for 2 hours of your life.
Felicia loved12 Years a Slavethis movie doesn’t shy away from depicting the horrific but yet realistic truth about slavery and afro-american history. our duty of never forgetting this past drives us to actively learn from this powerful movie. it is a must seen.

this is such an incredibly powerful film. i can’t help but draw comparisons to what ICE is doing to immigrants today in the united states and how decades from now our descendants will make film adaptations of the horror befalling people of color right now in our country and people will watch it and…
MK liked12 Years a SlaveA well made movie. The story was very hard hitting and painful to watch
Buxop is "meh" on12 Years a SlaveBoring... Yes, the actors... and the shots... and blah, blah, blah... But do we need this movie to realize that slavery is bad? I mean, you could just write “Slavery is bad” on the screen and watch it for two hours. Everyone knows this, but no one wants to say anything against this picture and its…

A searing and thought-provoking portrait of pre-Civil War American slavery... 12 Years a Slave is an absorbing and divinely crafted film, even if it is a brutal watch.

12 Years a Slave is to the “peculiar institution” what “Schindler’s List” was to the Holocaust: a work that, finally, asks a mainstream audience to confront the worst of what humanity can do to itself. If there’s no Oskar Schindler here, that’s partly the point.

It speaks to the courage and resilience of one man, the savagery of many, and the potential, for both good and for ill, in us all.

12 Years a Slave is by no means light entertainment but it provides a more worthwhile cinematic experience than about 90% of what's out there and the impressions it leaves aren't easily dismissed or dispelled.
