'Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse' Score: Listen To The First Track

Fire track alert! The first song from the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse score dropped today, and it’s fantastic.

Thanks to Black Panther, original music for movies is actually cool again. Outside of a few recent examples, music has been an afterthought in blockbusters for the last decade. Scores that make people sit up and pay attention have taken a step back in tentpoles as the trend has moved toward music being buried in the mix rather than standing out. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the latest superhero movie to buck that trend, but that doesn’t mean getting there wasn’t a challenge.

How could they create a Spider-Verse score that was as dynamic and energetic as the movie itself? How could they achieve auditorily what the animators did visually? Composer Daniel Pemberton had his work cut out for him. Just as the animation blended various traditional comic book and computer animation techniques, the music blended different genres. The first track, “Spider-Man Loves You,” combines elements of hip-hop, electronic, and classical into one kinetic soundscape. Pemberton himself released the song on Spotify, but it’s not available in the U.S. Luckily, The Playlist shared it on Vimeo for our lucky ears to ear.

I will neither confirm nor deny that I have already listened to this track half a dozen times (confirm; definitely confirm). Could the Spider-Verse score get as much recognition as the movie itself? The movie itself is already getting bonkers reviews and introducing a whole new audience to the wacky Spider-people of the Spider-Verse. With it collecting plenty of awards season buzz, there’s chatter that it’s not simply the best animated movie of the year, but the best superhero movie, period. And that’s not just for this year, but multiple years. Here’s the official synopsis to get you up to speed:

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to see Peter Parker be a disaster of a teacher to Miles Morales, just like he is in the comics. His heart’s in the right place, but when you’ve been lone-wolfing it for decades, conveying that knowledge doesn’t come easy. Just one more day until we get to see their dysfunctional mentor-mentee relationship on the big screen.
