Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan looks like it’s going to be a huge hit for the studio.
The first teaser trailer dropped during halftime of the Women’s World Cup final Sunday and scored 175.1 million online views in its first 24 hours, reports Deadline. The teaser is now Disney’s second most-watched live-action trailer, coming in behind the upcoming The Lion King. Jon Favreau’s CG-remake of the Disney classic debuted with 224 million views.
Mulan landed in another place in the record books, becoming the seventh biggest trailer launch of all time. It joins the ranks of Avengers: Endgame, Infinity War, Lion King, IT, and The Fate of the Furious.
Fans helped drive up those views by sharing and re-posting the video, with the same fervor they show for Marvel movies like Endgame. Another notable stat for the trailer: 52 million views came from China.
The original 1998 animated movie, about a young woman who becomes one of her country’s greatest warriors, earned $304M worldwide at the box office and has grown a loyal fanbase over the last 21 years, as evidenced by these huge numbers.
The remake is directed by Niki Caro from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek, based on the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.” Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li star.
Mulan arrives in theaters March 27, 2020.
