San Diego Comic-Con might be the biggest geek convention in the U.S. but CinemaCon is – at least for now – the coolest, thanks to the Disney presentation and it dropping some new footage of Avengers: Endgame

We’ve seen precious little of Endgame to this point – which, to date, I can not figure out if I am mad about (GIMME IT ALL) or happy about (DON’T SPOIL IT FOR ME). While the new footage isn’t out there for the world (and likely won’t be, considering the release date is only a few weeks away), I can at least do you the courtesy of breaking it down.

NOTE: SPOILERS from this point down. Obviously, if you don’t want to know anything, TURN AWAY NOW.

I’ll give you a minute to leave.

Okay, now that they’re gone, lemme break down this bad boy for the rest of you who don’t give a flying fuuuuu about spoilers and just gotta know, man.

The clip opens with Carol Danvers in the Avengers compound and girl doesn’t really get how things work – and nor does she care. She blows past Steve and Natasha and Steve asks where she’s going: “To kill Thanos,” she replies.

Oh. Okay, Ms. Cocky AF. Like they haven’t tried that already. The rest of the Avengers are visibly a little nettled by her, uh, less than tactful ways. Nat, ever the diplomat and peacemaker, steps forward and reminds Carol that they generally all work as a team and right now, they’re a little fragile – the unspoken warning for Carol to cool her plasma jets, hoss. The Avengers are obviously not in a good place. They’re grief-stricken, angry, and feeling defeated.

…and Carol just doesn’t really give af.

That’s when Nebula shows up and reminds them of what they’re up against. She fills Carol (and the rest of the Avengers) in on growing up with Thanos, how he tortured her. But Nebula is a good source of information – turns out that when Thanos was done with what he planned to do, he’d always talked about a “garden” he’d go to – at which point Rhodey, who had all the best lines in the clip – sarcastically quips, “That’s cute. Thanos has a retirement plan.”

The bitterness is clear in his voice.

Rocket then pipes up and corroborates Nebula’s story. And it turns out, Thanos has used the Stones again and Rocket was able to track down the ping in space like some for of Infinity Stones GPS system. (I don’t know, you guys – it’s comic book science; you know how it goes.)

At this point, Carol is ready to GO. Steve is actually on board with her, ready to avenge his fallen friends, as is Nat. Unsurprisingly, Bruce is hesitant – ever the pragmatic one, our Dr. Banner, and points out that the last time they tried to take on Thanos, they got their asses handed to them.

Carol reminds him they didn’t have her last time and that’s when a clearly annoyed Rhodey drops his second great line of the clip: ““Hey. New girl. Everyone in this room is all about that superhero life.” And then he asks her a reasonable question: “Where the hell have you been all this time?” She points out while they were defending Earth, she was defending a whole lot more.

(At this point, I have to interject that those of you familiar with the comics, an awful lot of Carol + Rhodey ships started sailing at that moment.)

This leads up to the exchange we’ve seen in previous trailers: Thor, up to that point quiet and taking it all in, stands up and summons Stormbreaker near Carol’s head and declares, “I like this one.”

Cut back to Cap, always the leader even with half a team left. Steve’s call? “Let’s go get this son of a bitch.”

Gasp. Steve, language.

Cut to the tattered remnants of our Avengers in the Benatar: Captain America, Black Widow, War Machine, Bruce Banner, Thor and Rocket and Captain Marvel piloting the ship. Show of hands, Rocket wonders: Who hasn’t been in space before? Three hands immediately go up: Steve, Nat, and Rhodey.

Steve looks…more than a little green-tinged, and Rocket warns them that no one better puke in his ship.

The last shot is of the galaxy right before a hyperspace jump opening up and reflecting in a close-up shot of Steve Rogers’ eyes.

That scrawny kid from Brooklyn sure has come a long way, hasn’t he?

And there you have it, the footage that was screened at CinemaCon. It will be interesting to see the friction Carol creates with her blunt way rubbing up against the exposed nerves of the still-raw Avengers. Let’s hope Nat sets her straight before she disrupts the whole team.
