An 'Aquaman' Sequel Is (Finally) Officially Happening

Aquaman fans? Get excited.

Warner Bros. has finally given the go-ahead to the Aquaman sequel by setting the first film’s co-writer, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, to write the film’s script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

As of now, director James Wan is set to return in a producer-only capacity — no word yet if he will take over director duties again.

In December, Jason Momoa’s first solo outing as the DC Comics hero conquered the box office to the tune of $1.2 billion worldwide. The first film eclipsed The Dark Knight Rises as Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing DC movie ever. Usually, when movies mint that much money, a sequel is announced very soon after the first film opens – if not right before release. So with all that box office gold, why did the studio wait two months before pulling the trigger on A2uaman: The Legend of Curly’s Gold (title TBD)?

THR says the reason, in part, is that the studio wanted to show sensitivity toward Wan’s schedule. The prolific filmmaker is reportedly in no real hurry to (no pun intended) dive back into another epic production and WB did not want to pressure him or the project’s other key collaborators.

The news comes on the heels of the recent announcement that The Trench, a horror-ish spinoff set in the Aquaman universe (yup, that’s now a thing), is also in the works.

No word yet if Amber Heard will reprise her role opposite Momoa in the sequel. Or whether or not the studio plans to bring back the first film’s MVP: Topo, the drum-playing octopus.
