After 30-plus years of giving audiences pure nightmare fuel, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser is getting a reboot.

Screenwriter David S. Goyer (Batman BeginsBlade) has been tapped by Spyglass Media Group to write and produce the much-anticipated remake, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new take plans to reimagine the soul-tearing demon, Pinhead, as the three-decades-old property gets updated for a 2019 audience.

The first Hellraiser movie in 1987 centered on Pinhead, the iconic Hell Priest played by Doug Bradley, and his evil puzzle box that could be used to summon him and his terrifying horde of Cenobites. No word yet on what the story for Goyer’s remake is, or how he and the filmmakers will tap into Barker’s rich mythology, but the R-rated horror movie is being fast-tracked for production.

Chris Stone, Spyglass’ VP of Development and Production, said in a statement: “Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare-come-true.”

The Hellraiser property is a big deal among horror fans. The franchise has 10 sequels under its belt, and the first film is considered one of the scariest (and bloodiest) horror movies ever. A lot is riding on Pinhead’s new movie, which we will no doubt be watching with the lights on.
