I really enjoyed this movie. Yes, it's about Sarah Winchester, but the house itself is the star as it should be. Great atmospheric horror. Very much an old fashioned horror flick.
Very enjoyable. This movie will make you jump. I enjoy that they made it scary without having to resort to gore. They also didn't go over the top with the ghosts. Well done.
Mirren always brings a touch of class, of course, even to deluxe schlock like this. But Clarke is something of a blank leading man while the secondary characters are mostly pale phantoms sleepwalking through a thinly drawn plot.
You won't lose yourself in this haunted house, even though that was supposed to be the whole point. A film about a labyrinth filled with ghosts quickly becomes methodical and familiar, stranding a great cast in an inert supernatural thriller.

Did You Know?
- The Winchester Mystery House is a mansion located in San Jose, California. It is believed to be haunted by the victims of the Winchester rifle. It has been a tourist attraction since 1923, a year after Sarah Winchester's death.
- A large portion of the movie has to deal with the famous Winchester lever-action rifle being used during the American Civil War. This is factually wrong. The first Winchester lever-action model did not appear until after the war, in 1866. The similar-looking Henry rifle and the Spencer rifle were the main repeaters used during the war, and even then repeating rifles were themselves rare on the average Civil War battlefield. Most troops used then-traditional single-shot weapons, primarily "rifle-muskets."
- Arthur Gates: We're worried about her sanity, Dr. Price.
