Synopsis

Jack ventures to remote New Zealand for the funeral of his estranged mother and meets her widow Jill. But his mother's spirit returns to inhabit each of their bodies, instigating a life-threatening three-way nocturnal dance.
Moviegoers are saying
This New Zealand supernatural drama has audiences deeply divided between those calling it 'unbelievably their jam' for its gorgeous cinematography and emotional devastation, and others left confused by its abstract narrative. The film's stunning monochrome visuals and performances by Dacre Montgomery and Vicky Krieps create a haunting meditation on grief, trauma, and memory that either completely captivates viewers or leaves them scratching their heads.

Things eventually escalate, the pressure valve of pent-up emotions building and releasing. But it’s a long and demanding ride to get there, full of solemn looks and thousand-yard stares.

Solid performances, a clever conceit, and technical over-competence behind the camera bolster what is ultimately a predictable and sometimes unpleasant viewing experience.

Went Up the Hill doesn’t just explore grief, it expresses it.
