Synopsis

In the USSR in 1937, a newly appointed prosecutor discovers an undestroyed letter from a prisoner that reveals corruption in the secret police, the NKVD. His search for the truth becomes dangerous.
Moviegoers are saying
Sergei Loznitsa's Stalin-era thriller divides audiences between those who appreciate its slow-burn psychological horror and atmospheric critique of authoritarianism, and those who found themselves literally falling asleep during its deliberately paced, dialogue-heavy scenes. Critics praise Loznitsa's subtle approach to depicting systemic corruption without graphic violence, though many struggle with the film's intentionally suffocating bureaucratic atmosphere.

It would be a mistake to seek too many lessons from the film. Its great achievement is in the creation of a timeless nowhere that is both drawn from history and independent of it. That is the absurdist ideal.

A slow cinema treat, Two Prosecutors rewards patience, with endless waiting rooms and antechambers both a limbo state and a last-chance saloon for Kornyev. It’s a haunting, mesmerising, pessimistic piece of work.

The film is a satiric look at Stalinism and bureaucracy with shades of Kafka, Orwell, and Gogol.
